Ericsson to deploy fiber optic network for Cabletica

Swedish telecoms operator Ericsson (Nasdaq: ERIC) and Costa Rican cable operator Cabletica have signed a five-year contract to build and operate a next generation fiber optic network optimized for mobile networks, Ericsson said in a statement.

The network will enable the transport of any type of data and accommodate future services such as IPTV and video on demand.

Costa Rica is currently liberalizing its mobile and internet markets, and an auction for mobile spectrum is underway, and this new network is expected to coincide with increasing demand from the new entrants.

Cabletica will be the first company to implement Ericsson’s cable TV technology in Central America and the Caribbean.

“The imminent opening up of the telecoms sector in Costa Rica represents important opportunities for the introduction of new and exciting services, and Cabletica is well positioned to meet that demand,” Ericsson’s director for Central America and the Caribbean, Niklas Heuveldop, said.
