The Important Certification for DAC Cables

A DAC (Direct Attach Copper) cable, commonly used in data centers and high-speed networking environments, is designed for short-range communication between network devices such as switches, routers, and servers. It typically has integrated transceivers at both ends, allowing it to transmit data at high speeds without needing separate optical transceivers.
Common Data Rates for DAC Cables:
  1. 10G SFP+ DAC: Supports a data rate of 10 gigabits per second (Gbps). These cables are used for 10G Ethernet and can span distances up to 7 meters.
  2. 25G SFP28 DAC: Supports a data rate of 25 Gbps and is often used in modern data centers for 25G Ethernet connections, with typical distances of up to 5 meters.
  3. 40G QSFP+ DAC: Supports 40 Gbps, commonly used for 40G Ethernet. The maximum length is usually 3-7 meters.
  4. 100G QSFP28 DAC: Supports 100 Gbps, typically used for 100G Ethernet. These cables are used for short distances up to 3-5 meters.
  5. 200G QSFP56 DAC: Supports 200Gbps, commonly used for 200G Ethernet.The maximum length is usually 3meters.
  6. 400G QSFP-DD DAC: Supports data rates of 400 Gbps, which is used in cutting-edge data centers for extremely high-speed connectivity. The distance can reach to 3 meters.
Length Consideration:
  • DAC cables are typically used for very short distances (up to 7 meters), as signal attenuation over longer distances is a limitation with copper. For longer distances, Active Optical Cables (AOC) or fiber optics are preferred.
The data rate of DAC cables can range from 10 Gbps to 400 Gbps, depending on the type and generation of the cable.
The most important certification for DAC (Direct Attach Copper) cables is CEI (Conformity of Electronic Industries), which governs the electrical characteristics and performance of high-speed interconnects, including DAC cables. However, there are a few key standards and certifications relevant to the quality, interoperability, and performance of DAC cables in various networking environments:
1. IEEE Standards
  • IEEE 802.3: This is the most important Ethernet standard. Different parts of the 802.3 standard define various Ethernet speeds and media types:
    • IEEE 802.3ae: Defines 10 Gigabit Ethernet (used with 10G DACs).
    • IEEE 802.3ba: Defines 40 Gigabit and 100 Gigabit Ethernet (used with 40G and 100G DACs).
    • IEEE 802.3by: Defines 25 Gigabit Ethernet.
    • IEEE 802.3cd: Defines 50G, 100G, and 200G Ethernet.
    • IEEE 802.3bs: Defines 200G and 400G Ethernet.
These standards ensure that DAC cables work within Ethernet networks at their respective speeds and interoperate properly with other devices.
2. SFF (Small Form Factor) Standards
  • SFF-8431: Defines the specifications for SFP+ DAC cables.
  • SFF-8402: Defines specifications for SFP28 DAC cables used for 25Gbps Ethernet.
  • SFF-8665: Defines the specifications for QSFP+ DAC cables (40Gbps).
  • SFF-8679 and SFF-8636: Define specifications for QSFP28 DAC cables (100Gbps) and provide standards for high-speed electrical and management interfaces.
3. MII (Multisource Agreement) Compliance
  • SFP+ MSA, QSFP+ MSA, and QSFP28 MSA: Multisource agreements define the interoperability standards for the respective form factors of DAC cables. These MSAs ensure that DAC cables from different manufacturers are compatible with networking equipment from various vendors.
4. RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) Compliance
  • Ensures that the DAC cables are free from hazardous substances such as lead, mercury, and cadmium, making them environmentally friendly.
5. CE and FCC Certifications
  • CE (Conformité Européenne): This certification is required for products marketed in the European Union. It ensures that the product meets health, safety, and environmental protection standards.
  • FCC (Federal Communications Commission): Ensures that electronic equipment, including DAC cables, complies with the regulations regarding electromagnetic interference (EMI) in the United States.
6. ISO/IEC 11801
  • Specifies cabling requirements for DAC cables used in data centers, ensuring high-quality data transmission performance, low latency, and electrical performance.
Summary of Key Certification:
  • IEEE Standards (802.3): Most important for ensuring DAC cables comply with Ethernet networking requirements.
  • SFF/MSA: Ensures compatibility and form factor standards.
  • RoHS/CE/FCC: Environmental and regulatory certifications.
Ensuring that DAC cables comply with these standards and certifications is crucial for reliable performance, safety, and interoperability in high-speed data networks.
